Where are all the active riders?

More than 100 of them were at a recent meeting of the Long Island Harley Riders, held at the VFW Hall in Huntington Station last Sunday.  I was the guest speaker and had a chance to tell a few “stories” from my “Tips, Tricks and Techniques” columns in Full Throttle magazine. The president of the group, Bill Vultaggio, gave me a warm welcome, as did the other members (even though I came on my Yamaha FZ6)! If you like to ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles and want to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts who are active and well-organized, this is the group for you!   You can find more information about them at http://liharleyriders.com/  –Diane

Big Apple M/C School supports Memorial Run

Smithtown, N.Y. – The Chris Mannino Memorial Bike run to raise awareness of motorcycle and boating safety ran without a hitch today, ending at Blacksmith’s Tavern in Smithtown. More than 80 people registered and pulled together to support this event, organized by Chris’ sister Tabitha.  Chris, an avid motorcyclist, was killed in a boating accident in late June when the vessel he was on was hit by another boat. The driver of the other vessel was charged with boating while intoxicated (BWI).  Both Diane and George of the Big Apple Motorcycle School are active members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and teach boating safety. This event was an opportunity to support education and training for both motorcyclists and boaters.

Minimal Competency

Most beginners at any sport are “minimally competent”. They’ve just learned the skills and need more experience and training to get better. Practicing the correct techniques creates good habits.  Ask any golfer or skiier how long it takes to become proficient … it doesn’t happen overnight! Additional training and coaching can help.  Consider taking the MSF BRC2 Experienced RiderCourse on your own bike. As one of our past students said after taking a course, “I’ve been riding since the mid 60’s. I thought I was pretty much aware of what a good rider knew but BIG APPLE has given me insight I may not have had or used and proves you can teach an old dog new tricks!” Check the registration page for upcoming courses and check it out for yourself!

International Women & Motorcycling Conference

Carson City, Nevada - The sixth American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) International Women & Motorcycling Conference in late July/early August was a great success! Many of the women rode thousands of miles to get to the conference and attendance was close to 550. It was not unusual to hear mileage of 2,500 and more.  George and I rode two BMW K1600GTL tourers from Torrance, California to the conference. The Sierra Nevada mountains provided a perfect riding opportunity, with plenty of sunshine, temperatures in the high 80s and low humidity. We put on more than 1,300 miles and got to experience what it’s like to ride some very big bikes through the twisties and the open road. I gave four seminars called “The Best of Tips, Tricks and Techniques columns” and more than 150 people attended.  It was a great experience and we can’t wait for the next one!
